You are the player. That's obviously not your name, but we'll address you as such for the time being. We don't know your name unless you tell us yourself... or command the batter to do it for you. Player is an all round term. Those in the business will refer to you as a puppeteer of sorts, or the One Who Commands . It's obvious which is easier to say, so Player it will be. You control the batter through your computer, am I correct? That's strange. I could swear that you are...

Right there.

You look surprised. Your mouth won't move, as if it is sewn shut. Maybe it is, you would need a mirror to check. There isn't one nearby. You are floating several inches above the ground, and I, the narrator, appear to be the only one to see you. Well yes, so far no-one else can see you, but just you wait. Over there is batter. He's in pause mode right now. Would you like to go and control him, get a bit of practice? You nod your head. You wander over to the sleeping man and touch his shoulder. A piece of thread appears and attaches to your hand. You brush your hand across him, gathering the threads, then step a few paces away. You softly whisper for him to wake, and he does. He looks straight at you, knowing instantly who you are. You're the entity who guides his path. He accepts this, and walks ahead at your request. You figure out how to guide him, and head to the nearest building. A cat sits outside, tail twitching.

"Ah, hello there," the cat begins, "what is your name?"
The batter replies, as you cannot speak.
"I am the batter. I am here on a sacred mission to purify these lands."
The cat's massive grin seems to widen slightly, and you wonder how that is possible.
"How silly. I wasn't refering to you..." he turned his gaze from the batter to you. "I was talking to the puppeteer."

A shiver ran down your spine as you realised just how broken the fourth wall already was. You haven't even had a battle tutorial yet. The batter didn't flinch.
"Her name is (name) and she is the one who controls me."
The cat chuckled slightly.
"I am the Judge. Are you by any chance a figment of my imagination ? I was sure there was no-one else in zone 0."
The batter shook his head slowly. You though to yourself, 'is this cat insane, or is it just me ?'

The cat's tail twitched. "also, it would be nice if the narrator could refer to me as the Judge also."

If you insist, Judge.

The Judge tilted his head, looking at the batter again. The batter gazed back stoically. The Judge looked back to you, staring right into your eyes. It was mildly disconcerting, so you looked at the batter instead.
"Well, I happen to know more than you seem to, so if you want, I'll be your guide."

You and the batter nod simultaneously, and the Ca-- I mean, Judge stood.

"Follow me~"

He jumped onto the roof of the building, then sat down again, washing his paws. Biting your lip, you led the Batter to the ladder. You weren't too sure how to make him climb, but he did that himself, climbing with agility. Following him up, the strings gently dragged you up, so you had no need to climb. The feeling of floating was strange to you, but you sighed in resignation, knowing that until the game was done, you had to bear with. The Judge was waiting patiently for you when the batter reached the top. Your foot brushed gently against the roof before you rose to floating again. The Judge seemed amused by something, and blinked slowly at you.
"Would you like to learn how to 'purify' the spectres?"

The batter nodded, but you hesitated. Nonetheless, the Judge stood, casually stretching, before his eyes glowed red. The whole format of the background changed to the battle screen, and your eyes widened. The batter seemed unfazed with it, it being a normal occurrence to him. The Judge was in standard battle pose.
"Okay, you have three modes there, see? Attack, auto, and flee."

You looked to your right, and sure enough, there was a screen of some sort. You brushed a finger along it, scrolling the options. 'Flee' was grayed out, and you couldn't press it. You looked over to the cat, who was still grinning widely.
"If you choose attack, you get to control the batter's attacks and competence. If you choose auto, the batter will attack how he sees fit. Choose attack for now."

You slide your finger to the 'attack' button, and clicked it. The screen shifted.

"Now, it says attack, Competence, and flee again. Attack will do a simple attack of a set damage. This won't waste any CP. Competence however, will do a special move, which will take from the CP, competence points. Do you understand?"

You nod, and the world returns to it's previous appearance. The cat jumps up to the roof of the next, higher building. You follow, and end up by a staircase. The Judge goes down the stairs, and you motion for the batter to follow. Looking around the room, you note that there are numbers on the wall, and blocks on the floor. The Judge leaves you to figure out the puzzles, and you manage to think your way down to the bottom floor. The Judge rushes to the other side and begins guzzling a conveniently placed bowl of cat-food. Oh how you wish you could talk, you would give him a right telling off for ditching you. Maybe it's better that you can't talk, we don't want any swearing.

You make a rude gesture at me, and I reply in kind. Just remember, I can make you do the most embarrassing things you can think of. Well, the most embarrassing thinks I can think of, that is. There, now you're wearing a tutu over your other clothes. Don't you even think of swearing at me again, or I'll make you dance the harlem shake. You yank the pink tutu off, annoyed. Ignoring me, you finish the last puzzle, and gladly make your way out. You could have sworn you'd seen a shadow over there, some guy with a mask. But that's impossible, we're trying to follow the storyline of the game. Well, so far, anyway. Maybe you heard a laugh, but that's obviously not how the game went.

Anyway, where were we? Oh yes, I remember. The tutu's back. I think it's funny. What do you mean that's not in the game? Well duh, it's a reader insert, I insert the reader into the scenario, what they do isn't necessarily in the original game.

Stop throwing me off, we've got a good story going here.

So, you returned to the Judge, who had thankfully finished. The door on the other side of the room was now open, and you followed him out, to a red box. It too was floating, but it was obviously a-- The Judge shushed me. He wants to tell you in person.

"This is a save box. It'll also allow you to return to the nothingness, from where you'll be able to go between zones. Try it, and maybe I'll see you in zone one."

You go over, the batter following, and you touch it. A glow surrounds the batter as his health and CP return to full, and you touch the box. Options appear above it, and you touch 'Return to the nothingness'. As you do, you possibly heard the laugh again. The area around you changes to black. It really is the 'nothingness'... except the patterns on the floor. Each one has options floating above it, and the name of the zones. You manoeuvre the batter over to 'Zone one' like the Judge had mentioned, and clicked one of the options...
:/ What? I can break the fourth wall as many times as the media allows. Also, you're a she, deal with it.
