There's a glitch.

A sign hovers above your head, giving you the option to go to Zone ?. You look over at the batter, and he does nothing. Obviously, this isn't part of the game.... but remember, nor are you. You're from a different world altogether... Maybe this'll help you get back? Maybe not.

Maybe it's just a glitch.

You want to say something, to ask where to go, but again, you can't talk. Hey, here's a thought. Have you ever wondered what would happen if you, I don't know, say.... Broke something? Something that isn't meant to be broken? Of course not, you just follow the game blindly, don't you. That's what all you silly humans do. Try breaking the sign. Come on! You resist my narrative powers and touch one of the buttons...

Your hand slips, and you miss the button altogether. You frown in anger, and try again, but miss. It's as if the game itself wants you to click the one above you. Okay, now there's definitely a laugh coming from somewhere. It's taunting you, daring you. You huff and turn on your heels, checking all the other zones. Their options are greyed out. You need a Zodiac key or something to open 'the room', whatever that is, so you return to Zone one's screen. Once more you attempt to press 'enter zone', but once again it eludes you.

"(name)...." The batter mumbles, " You can't go to zone 1. We have to purify zone ? first..."

You turn to him, confused. He hadn't tried to help before.... You tried to press the button one more time, before giving up and raising your hand to touch the sign for 'Zone ?' . Instantly, the floor around you begins to crumble, and the batter drags you away, so you don't fall. The fallen pieces swerve and slow, floating into a spiral staircase. Downwards, there is only whiteness, up here, darkness. You Motion for the increasingly self-aware batter to go first, which he does, and you follow. You notice that a few of the threads attaching the two of you were fraying, and breaking as you went lower and lower. As soon as the batter touched the ground floor, all of the unbroken threads snapped at once. He took in a sharp breath, looking back at you in surprise. confused, you lift your hands, seeing the threads begin to fade and disappear.

"This... this isn't part of the game." The batter looks around, worried. "Where to go...?"
He seemed lost, like a child who's let go of their parent's hand for the first time and found out that no-one was ever there.
"What do we do, (name)?"
He still had the stoic expression, but you could tell that he was scared. Some people ran past, fleeing something. They all made strange 'hhh' noises as they ran, and you quickly grabbed one by the shoulder. He shook in fear, and grabbed your hand.
"H-Help us please... we... there are....S...Spectres e-everywhere! W-Where are..."

He didn't get to finish his sentence, as a massive rat-spectre ran into the fray, chasing the little men. One of them was caught and eaten right there, which made you feel sick. You tapped batter on the shoulder, not able to control his movement anymore, and pointed to the creature. The batter's eyes hardened into rage, and he ran at it. The world blurred and switched to a poorly animated battle screen. The little man was still there, so I pushed him out of the way. Hush now, don't distract the battlers. He nodded, face pale and scared, and I returned my attention to recording the battle. Which was nearly over.
Goddammit.

You still had access to the battle screen, and you were guiding his attacks with startling tactics. You tapped 'Competence' and selected 'furious homerun', a move that shouldn't have been acquired yet. And still... The batter ran in and dealt the finishing blow to the rat-spectre's head, destroying him. I mean, purifying.

Somewhere in the crowd of little men, a masked man laughs. And then tells me that they're called 'Elsens', not 'little men'. Thanks mister.

As soon as the monster is gone, the Elsens calm down. Some of them sit down. Duh, on the floor, do you think this is the zone of randomly appearing chairs or something? Well it's not, so remember that later when I decide to use my narrative powers to make a chair appear.
Anyway, back to the story now, I guess. From the corpse of the rat-spectre, a ring arose. Judge seemed to appear out of nowhere, and sauntered over.
"I see you've found an 'Alpha'. This one bonds to the batter and will..."
He notices the lack of thread and comes closer.
"What's this? The threads are gone...."

"And good riddance, I'd say. Wouldn't you agree, Batter? Player?"
The masked man came over, and laughed. You recognised the laugh as the one you may not have heard three or four times when we were in zone 0. He bowed slightly.
"My name is Zacharie, it's nice to actually meet you. What's your name, player?"
Judge flicked his tail and replied in your stead.
"Zacharie, did you not notice that she cannot speak? Her name is (name), and for some reason, she awoke in the game."
Whoops, that was probably me, but don't tell them that~ Anyway, Zacharie nodded, already realising this.
"Don't play me for stupid, Pedro. She is still the player, no?"
"Mmm... Maybe not, actually."

Zacharie tilted his head at the cat, and you floated closer, waiting for the Judge's explanation.
"Look at it this way. This is a game, yes? We're either scripted or controlled... Right?"
Both Zacharie and batter nodded. You just listened in mild confusion, not knowing what they were on about.
"She's neither. And now, nor is the batter. And I'm pretty sure nothing in this room is scripted. Therefore... We're not in a game anymore."
Zacharie looked around. "So nothing in this room is scripted?"
The judge nodded. The fur on the back of his neck ruffled, and he looked left, hissing. You turned to see, but the batter quickly pushed you out of the way as something rushed by, knocking you and the batter over. A bright flash made you shut your eyes, and suddenly the light was fine again. When you opened your eyes, you were in a garden. It was a sunny day, and you half-expected that it was just a dream... But the fact that the batter was still looming over you crossed that thought right out of your head. He stood up, coughing nervously. Zacharie sat up near you, having also been knocked over.
"Wow, the graphics are at least realistic here... If we're still in a game, that is."

You stood up, looking around. This garden seemed familiar. Apart from the elsens which were scattered around, that is. Hmmm...
It's not my garden by the way, you know. It's not your garden either. You glare at me for stating the obvious. You knew it wasn't your garden. You also knew it wasn't a game. But of course, your mouth was still sewn up, so you had no way of telling Zacharie that.

"(Name)...?"

You heard a quiet voice behind you...
:/ Yup, I did chapter two~~
